FAQ
Is my project Jewish enough?
Projects should provide insight into some aspect of Jewish experience—contemporary or historical—with an expansive and inclusive range of what this can mean. Filmmakers need not be Jewish. Please reference our “What We Fund” and our “Curatorial Philosophy” sections for more information.
Can I email you story ideas, scripts, and other project materials?
Jewish Story Partners is a film granting organization which currently supports U.S. documentary feature films with a producer and director attached and footage from the project to share. We can only accept materials through our formal application process, with two open calls per year and decisions made in spring and fall.
Does my project count as “U.S.-based”?
We currently support documentary feature films where an active producer and/or director are based in the U.S., and spend the majority of their time at a U.S. address.
Do you fund international documentary features, scripted films, series, or shorts?
At this time, only U.S. documentary feature films are eligible. In the coming years, we hope to expand our scope of funding.
What stages of production do you support?
We are open to considering films in development, pre-production, production and post-production. We do not fund distribution and impact phases through our open call at this time. Our Education-Impact Program is reserved for current grantees.
When does JSP accept applications?
JSP accepts applications through one open call per year. The annual application will open in late fall each year and close in January. Decisions will be announced by early summer.
Can my project reapply for funding?
Current grantees will only be permitted to reapply once in the lifetime of their project.
Projects not yet supported by JSP will be permitted to apply up to three times.
We strongly advise all applicants to resubmit only if significant advancements have been achieved on the project. Please feel free to contact info@jewishstorypartners.org with any clarifying questions about this policy.
What if I don’t have any footage yet?
We require footage from the submitted project in order for it to be considered for a grant. We request that the project’s sample footage reflect something of your creative intent and approach — as much as is possible at the current stage. You’ll have the opportunity to include a written description of the footage sample. There is also a space in the application for you to submit prior work samples, but those are considered separate from the required footage.
How much does JSP grant to each project?
There is no set or average grant amount. JSP makes grants ranging between $5,000 and $75,000. There is no correlation between the phase of the project and the size of the grant.
How can I stay up-to-date about JSP news and funding opportunities?
We encourage you to subscribe to our newsletter to be kept in the loop on future funding opportunities. We also recommend that you connect with us on social media. You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
